Local: Look in the mirror and see yourself at 83 years old

AI is rapidly conquering a place in healthcare. We talk about applications, efficiency, and new possibilities. But we rarely ask the question: in what future do you *yourself* want to grow old?

Together with Luuk van Schendel (AI Lab Lead) and Judith Oosterom (Innovation Advisor), Surplus turned the perspective on. With the AI ​​mirror, you step into the shoes of yourself as an 83-year-old. This changes your perspective on the future; not you as a policymaker, administrator, or healthcare worker, but as someone who becomes dependent on care and support. And that changes the choices: What can you confidently leave to AI? And where do you draw the line?

The AI ​​mirror sparks conversations that sometimes chafe, surprise, and confront. Conversations that do not start with technology, but with trust, autonomy, humanity, and dignity. It is precisely there that direction for the deployment of AI in healthcare emerges. For the most important question surrounding AI is not what is technically possible, but what kind of society we want to create together.

National: The city gets a voice and talks back

European: The city sees what you don't

Every city has blind spots. Tunnels, parking garages, station buildings, public halls - spaces where something can go wrong before any human notices. Traditional smoke detectors don't work in large open spaces. Cameras record, but don't watch. Araani changes that. The Belgian company developed AI that detects smoke and fire through camera images - not on a server somewhere in the cloud, but directly on the camera itself. The footage never leaves the device. The AI sees the danger the moment it originates and triggers an alarm instantly. Breda Robotics collaborated with Araani to optimise this technology for urban environments - as part of the European Interreg Art-IE programme. During the demonstration you'll see how the technology works in practice. What does the camera detect? How fast? Entirely autonomously.
